The Power of Humour

By Judy Croon · Canada's Keynote Humourist · January 17, 2020

Let me tell you the most expensive thing in your workplace, and it isn’t the office espresso machine. It’s a stressed brain. A stressed brain doesn’t listen, doesn’t learn, and — eventually — doesn’t stay. Here’s the punchline the research keeps confirming: laughter is the fastest legal way to un-stress one.

That’s the whole idea behind my keynote, Relieving Work-Related Stress with Humour — sixty minutes of stand-up comedy with real resilience tools smuggled inside. Because when we laugh, we relax; and when we relax, we learn. That’s not a motivational poster. It’s neurochemistry.

Laughter isn’t a break from the work — it’s how the work sticks

Harvard studies have shown the brain literally shrinks under chronic stress. Shared laughter does the opposite: it lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) and releases endorphins and dopamine — the same bonding cocktail behind trust and connection. Stanford’s Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas found that a four-year-old laughs about 400 times a day; the average 40-year-old needs two and a half months to laugh that much. We fall off the “Humour Cliff” the day we get a lanyard — and our engagement, creativity and trust go over the edge with us.

When we laugh, we relax. When we relax, we learn.

Humour is the most peaceful tool in the belt

Here’s the part that turns humour from a “nice to have” into something bigger. Look at the great movement-builders — Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela. What their movements had in common is that they grew and endured by staying peaceful. And humour is one of the most peaceful tools we’ve got. As Stephen Colbert says: when we laugh, we can’t be afraid.

Think about what late-night hosts actually do — Colbert, Bill Maher, Canada’s own Samantha Bee, and Letterman, Leno, Carson, Jack Paar and Steve Allen long before them. They take the scariest headline of the day, add a punchline, and suddenly we can handle the truth. The joke quietly takes the power out of whatever’s frightening us.

Want proof? You’ve heard of the Donald Trump sandwich, right? Two slices of white bread, lots of bologna, Russian dressing… and a small gherkin. See — you feel a little better already. That’s the whole trick, and it’s exactly why a positive attitude matters so much.

The framework: 7 Ingredients to Laugh Long and Pro$per

The keynote isn’t only laughs (though there are plenty). It’s built around seven stress-relieving ingredients your people can actually use on Monday morning:

  1. Positive attitude — “A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make the effort worth it.” (Herm Albright)
  2. Perseverance — “When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” (FDR)
  3. Forgiveness — “To forgive is to set a prisoner free — and discover the prisoner was you.” (Lewis B. Smedes)
  4. Teamwork — because teamwork builds trust, and trust builds speed. (Russel Honoré)
  5. Family & friends — “Families are like fudge. Mostly sweet, with a few nuts.”
  6. Mental activity — “A mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” (Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.)
  7. Physical activity — “To know laughter is good. To do laughter is better. To be laughter is THE BEST.” (Dr. Madan Kataria, the Laughter Yoga guru)

What the rooms actually say

“The Power of Humour to Diffuse Stress and Improve Well-Being” was filled with laughter, energy and some very important takeaways. Our delegate feedback scores consistently rated your presentation as “Exceptional”! Your keynote was the perfect way to end an amazing day.

— GoodLife Fitness, Health & Wellness Leadership Summit

Even our COO took notes from a comedian. From now on, we’ll be more positive, more relaxed, and get to the portion of our brain we hardly use.

— Hydro One Leadership Conference

We’ve been very focused on our employees’ overall well-being — and in particular, mental well-being. Your session added the humour element!

— Canadian Olympic Committee

Stress at work is real. But so is the fix — and it’s a lot more fun than another trust fall. If your next conference, leadership event or gala could use a room that leaves laughing, listening and a little lighter, let’s chat.

Laugh long and pro$per.
