I was hoping this day wouldn’t come but sadly time is winding down. All I can say is that I hope grief councilors are standing by on May 25th. That will be the sad fateful day that Queen Oprah’s last show will be airing. The giant O on our tv screens will be disappearing for good.
Start the Oprah doomsday clock now. Really, Oprah, it’s a bit selfish. I mean, considering everything that has been going on in the world lately, could you have held on and picked a better time to step down- like never? Isn’t there anyone out there who can convince you to stay?
Hurry, Get Nelson Mandela on the phone or Bill Clinton or Desmond Tutu. Anybody, anyone-This can’t be happening.
Sure there will always be OWN- The Orpah Winfrey Network but it’s not the same.
Honestly, how many Halle Berry movies or Gayle King shows can we watch? Oprah took the best of everything and boiled it down to a pill sized piece of pop culture that we could ingest once a day from the comfort of our couch.
Everything from the celebrity interviews ( although, I really didn’t need to see Julia Roberts or John Travolta on an annual basis), to the self help tips ( even though Oprah cut off the experts half the time) to the extreme make-overs
( including Oprah- god bless that woman for showing herself on tv without the glam of the hair and make-up department every now and then. She was a true hero taking one for the team.)
I have to admit, I’m not impressed with all the re-runs lately but I’m sure there is a good reason. Perhaps, Queen Oprah is off doing charitable work somewhere; overseeing her school in Africa, brokering peace in Libya, or cooling down radioactive rods in Japan with her calming presence.
Oprah wasn’t and hasn’t been adored by everyone in the past. I can accept that. But no one can deny that fact that Oprah has changed lives, and in many instances, saved some, too. She doesn’t make the most but she’s one of those celebrities who puts her money where her mouth is and isn’t afraid of the backlash.
Yes, backlash. Imagine, when you’re doing good, people still dump on you. You can just imagine what they said behind Mother Theresa’s back.
One of Oprah’s biggest contributions to date is 40 million to her girls’ school in South Africa.
America criticized her for investing in another country.
Oprah said she was frustrated with American inner- city schools. She said, “The sense that you need to learn just isn’t there. If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.”
When the hounds from Fox went after her, Oprah said, “I find it interesting that white people are concerned about me educating black girls,” Even BET went after Oprah YES BET. At that point Oprah went quiet, scary quiet and then she took a deep breath…opened her mouth, rolled her eyes back and screamed, “To hell with your criticism…I don’t care what you have to say about what I did. I did it.”
Okay, perhaps she wasn’t that angry but I’m sure she was still pissed.
Think what you may, no one can deny the fact that Oprah has been the top rated talk show for two decades. Her show now airs in 145 different countries.
May 25th – prepare for a day of global sadness.
